Climbing on it feels like nothing else in Europe: instead of crimps and cracks you pull on cobbles and pockets, the movement is three-dimensional and intuitive, and holds appear where you don't expect them. It is one of the reasons climbers travel to Catalonia specifically, and it is why Montserrat is the single best place to try multi-pitch climbing near Barcelona.

Pitch by pitch

Pitch 1

An easy, confidence-building start on big cobbles — the pitch where you stop thinking about the rope and start enjoying the rock.

Pitch 2

Steadily up excellent conglomerate at around grade IV, with the exposure opening beneath you and the monastery coming into view.

Pitch 3

The crux: a short, thin vertical step at V+ that asks for precise feet rather than strength. The route takes around four hours at a relaxed pace, and the descent is two rappels down the east face, fully managed by your guide. You are typically back at the car in the early afternoon — which means this works comfortably as a day trip from Barcelona, with time to be back in the city for dinner.

Who it suits

This is an intermediate route, best suited to climbers who are comfortable seconding around V+ or 5a. You do not need multi-pitch experience — most people who climb it with us have never done a full route before, and the whole day is set up so you can follow, climb at your pace and enjoy the challenge as you go. You will be roped to a certified mountain guide throughout, at a maximum of three climbers per guide, with all technical equipment provided.

Trip Details & Inclusions

Dates, Location & Logistics

Duration: 1 day (~6h: 50 min approach, 3–4h climbing, descent by rappel, 50 min hike back)

Participants: 1–3 people per guide

Level: Intermediate — comfortable seconding V+/5a

Location: Gorros area, Montserrat — meeting at the monastery parking

From Barcelona: around 1 hour by car, or train + rack railway

Availability: All year — sunny mornings, ideal autumn to spring

What's included

Certified AEGM mountain guide

All technical gear (rope, harness, helmet, quickdraws)

Both rappels fully managed

Climbing shoes (bring your own or rent through us)

Transport to Montserrat

Don't want to hike up? That proximity is why it works so well as a day trip: you can leave the city in the morning, climb a full multi-pitch route, and be back for dinner. It is the closest serious multi-pitch climbing to Barcelona, and the reason so many climbers base themselves in the city.
</details>

      <details>
Can I get to Montserrat without a car?

Yes. Trains run from Barcelona to the foot of the mountain, where you transfer to the rack railway or cable car up to the monastery — which is exactly where we meet. It takes a little longer than driving and needs an early start, so tell us when you book and we will send the specific connections and timings for your date.
</details>

      <details>
What is Montserrat like for climbing?

Montserrat is one of Europe's great climbing massifs: hundreds of conglomerate spires above the Llobregat valley, with thousands of routes from single pitches to long multi-pitch adventures. The rock is unique — rounded cobbles cemented into a matrix, giving three-dimensional movement on pockets and cobbles rather than crimps. It has been climbed on for over a century and remains the spiritual home of Catalan climbing.
</details>

      <details>
When is the best time to climb in Montserrat?

Autumn through spring is ideal. The east-facing routes like Via del Carles catch morning sun, which makes them pleasant on cool days, and the shoulder seasons offer the most comfortable conditions. Summer is climbable but hot in the middle of the day, so we start early. Winter days can be excellent when the sun is out.
</details>

The route & your experience

      <details>
What is multi-pitch climbing, and how is it different?

A multi-pitch route is one that is longer than a single rope length, so it is climbed in stages — your guide leads a section, builds an anchor, and brings you up to join them, and you repeat until the summit. It means real height, real exposure and a genuine top, rather than lowering back to the ground. Via del Carles is five of those pitches, around 150 metres of climbing.
</details>

      <details>
Can a beginner do this route?

If you have climbed indoors and are comfortable seconding around V+ or 5a, yes. Most people who do this route with us have never climbed a multi-pitch before. You follow rather than lead, your guide handles all the rope work and both rappels, and the day is paced so you can climb at your rhythm and enjoy the challenge as you go. What matters is being comfortable moving on rock, not previous multi-pitch experience.
</details>

      <details>
Do I need my own equipment?

No — we provide all the technical gear: rope, harness, helmet and quickdraws. The only thing worth bringing is your own climbing shoes if you have them, since comfort matters over a full day. If you do not have shoes, we can arrange a rental pair for you.
</details>

      <details>
Is it scary? How exposed is it?

Honestly, yes, there is real exposure — you are 150 metres up a rock face with air beneath you, and that is a large part of why the day is memorable. But you are roped to a certified guide at every moment, on a fully bolted route, with equipment rated far beyond what is required. Most people find that after the first pitch the nerves settle into concentration, and by the summit the exposure has become the best part.
</details>

      <details>
How fit do I need to be?

Reasonably active is enough. The approach is around fifty minutes uphill, and the climbing itself is around four hours of intermittent effort with rests at each belay. If you can walk uphill for 50 minutes with a light pack and manage a gym climbing session, you have the fitness for this route.
</details>

      <details>
What happens if the weather is bad?

Conglomerate is unpleasant and unsafe when wet, so we do not climb in rain. If the forecast is against us we will contact you in advance and either move the date or refund you in full. We would rather reschedule than give you a poor and uncomfortable day out.
</details>

Booking

      <details>
How much does it cost?

The day costs €275 for one climber, or €175 per person for a group of two or three, which includes your certified guide and all technical equipment. Booking is instant online — pick your date above, and you receive confirmation by email straight away.
</details>

      <details>
Can I book for a group?

Yes, we take up to three climbers per guide on this route, and the per-person price drops when there are two or three of you.
