The Cavall Bernat stands alone on the ridge of Montserrat, visible from almost everywhere in the massif, and for decades it was considered simply unclimbable. The Via Normal is the line that proved otherwise, and climbing it is still a rite of passage for Catalan climbers.<\/p>\n\n      <p> The equipment of the route is a museum of every era of Catalan climbing: modern bolts alongside old pitons and the enormous fifty-centimetre spikes the first ascensionists hammered into the conglomerate. There's a strong psychological component to the route: a climbing well within reach of an intermediate climber, and the position, exposure and history that make it memorable.<\/p>\n\n      <div class=\"callout\">\n        <div class=\"tag\">\u2605 Climb it and you can join the Group Cavall Bernat<\/div>\n        <p>Founded in 1978, the Group Cavall Bernat has exactly one membership requirement: you must have climbed the Cavall Bernat, proven with a photograph from the summit. Members \u2014 <i>cavallistes<\/i> \u2014 meet once a year. It's a genuinely lovely piece of Catalan climbing culture, and you become eligible the moment you touch the Moreneta on top.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n\n      <h3>A summit with a story<\/h3>\n      <p>The first ascent was made on 27 October 1935 by Josep Boix, Josep Costa and Carles Balaguer, after a string of failed attempts by others. It was such an unlikely achievement that many people simply refused to believe it had happened \u2014 so in March 1936, Josep Costa climbed the spire <em>solo<\/em>, in front of the press, and the ascent was broadcast on the radio. It's arguably the first media climbing event in Spain. The whole saga has even a book to itself!<\/p>\n\n      <h3>Pitch by pitch<\/h3>\n      <div class=\"steps\">\n          <div class=\"step\"><div class=\"n\">Pitch 1 \u00b7 III<\/div><p>An exposed scramble through a small section of ridge up to the main wall. Not hard, but definetly will feel the exposure on both sides with bearly any protection. It sets the tone for the whole route.<\/p><\/div>\n        <div class=\"step\"><div class=\"n\">Pitch 2 \u00b7 V+<\/div><p>An airy flanking traverse across the wall, famously protected by a single bolt. Not hard climbing, yet thin and technical, the position is exposed from the very first moves.<\/p><\/div>\n        <div class=\"step\"><div class=\"n\">Pitch 3 \u00b7 V\/V+<\/div><p>The best pitch on the route and the reason people come: a magnificent dihedral that becomes steadily more aerial as you climb it, with 1935-vintage pitons still in the crack and rock polished smooth by ninety years of boots. The exit is the crux.<\/p><\/div>\n        <div class=\"step\"><div class=\"n\">Pitch 4 \u00b7 IV<\/div><p>A final section to the summit, with a poorly protected start off the belay, arriving beside the Moreneta \u2014 the small statue of the Virgin that sits on top of the spire.<\/p><\/div>\n        <div class=\"step\"><div class=\"n\">The summit<\/div><p>A genuine, tiny summit with 360-degree views across the whole massif: the Paret de l'Aeri, the Flautats, and the monastery below. There is nowhere else in Montserrat quite like standing here.<\/p><\/div>\n        <div class=\"step\"><div class=\"n\">Descent<\/div><p>Two rappels on double ropes, the second a long one, back to the foot of the spire \u2014 fully managed by your guide.<\/p><\/div>\n      <\/div>\n\n      <h3>How the day runs<\/h3>\n      <p>The approach is the longest part: around an hour and a quarter from the monastery on the old path toward Sant Jeroni, or shorter from the Santa Cec\u00edlia side. The climbing itself takes two to three hours at a relaxed pace, the descent is two rappels, and you're usually back at the car in the afternoon. It's an hour from Barcelona, so this works comfortably as a day trip from the city.<\/p>\n\n      <div class=\"callout warn\">\n        <div class=\"tag\">\u26a0 Who this route suits<\/div>\n        <p>You should be comfortable seconding V+ and happy with real exposure. You do not need multi-pitch experience \u2014 your guide handles every rope system, both rappels and all the decisions \u2014 but this is a route where the atmosphere and history matters more than the moves.
