Climb

If the Via Normal is the historic way up the Cavall Bernat, the Punsola-Reniu is the great one. Opened in May 1971 by Manel Punsola and Jesús Reniu, it follows the north-east arête of the spire from bottom to top, and it has become one of the most repeated and most loved routes in the entire massif.

The line is beautifully logical - you can trace it from the ground. It starts on friendly inclined slabs, steepens gradually into vertical and briefly overhanging terrain, and finishes by stepping onto the north face for a delicious slab of edged holds with the Paret dels Diables filling the horizon behind you.

★ Climb it free at 6c, or at V+ with a little aid

This is what makes the route so accessible. It's fully bolted, and the hard sections can be climbed free at up to 6c or passed using the bolts at around V+/A0, pulling on gear rather than the rock. That means a solid intermediate climber and a strong one can climb the same magnificent route on the same day, each getting exactly what they came for. We'll agree which version suits you before we start.

Pitch by pitch

Approach & R0

Around 45 minutes from the Santa Cecília parking on the Camí de l'Arrel, then a short scramble of about 30 metres to the first belay at the base of the arête.

Pitch 1 · IV+

A pleasant inclined slab on good rock — the warm-up, and a chance to get used to Montserrat's pebbles under your feet before anything demands much.

Pitches 2–4

The arête proper: ramps giving way steadily to steeper ground, with the exposure building beneath you and the protection getting closer together as the angle rises.

Pitches 5–6 · the crux

Where the difficulty concentrates.
The grade, the two ways to climb it, the exposure and the practicalities of Montserrat's great classic.

The grade

    <details>
Is it 6c or V+? Which is it?

Both, and that's the beauty of the route. It's fully bolted, so the hard sections can be climbed free at up to 6c, or passed by pulling on the bolts at around V+/A0. The line, the position and the summit are identical either way. We agree which version suits you before we set off, and it can change during the day if you're going well.
</details>

    <details>
What does A0 actually mean?

It means using the fixed protection to help you upward — pulling on a quickdraw or standing in a sling — rather than climbing the rock free. It's a completely legitimate and very common way to climb long classic routes in Montserrat, and it's what lets a solid intermediate climber enjoy a route with 6c sections without being shut down.
</details>

    <details>
Where is the hard climbing?

Concentrated on pitches five and six, where the arête goes vertical and briefly slightly overhanging. Pitch seven then has a famously airy start at around 6a — stepping onto the north face with more than 200 metres of air underneath — before easing into a superb slab of sharp edges to the summit.
</details>

    <details>
How does it compare with the Via Normal?

Longer, harder and more sustained: 240 metres and seven pitches against ninety metres and four. The Via Normal is the historic line with the 1935 story and vintage pitons; the Punsola-Reniu is the modern classic — better protected, better climbing, and a much bigger day. Same summit, entirely different experience.
</details>

Are you ready for it?

    <details>
What level do I need?

Comfortable seconding around V+, and happy to climb for four or five hours with real exposure below you. You don't need to lead, and you don't need previous multi-pitch experience — your guide runs every rope system, every belay and both rappels. What you do need is stamina and a head for height.
</details>

    <details>
How exposed is it?

Genuinely airy, particularly the seventh pitch, which starts with over 200 metres of air beneath your feet. That said, the route is well bolted and the exposure is the point — it's what makes the position on this spire so extraordinary. If serious height troubles you, the shorter Via Normal is the better choice.
</details>

    <details>
How fit do I need to be?

Reasonably fit. The approach is around 45 minutes uphill, the climbing is around five hours of intermittent effort with rests at each belay, and there's a descent afterwards. If you can climb all day at a crag and walk uphill comfortably, you'll manage.
</details>

Practical

    <details>
Is the route busy?

Often, yes — it's one of the most repeated routes in Montserrat and on a good weekend there's usually a party on it. Local guidebooks recommend starting early to avoid queueing behind slower teams, and we plan the day around that. Being first on the route is worth the early alarm.
</details>

    <details>
Where does the approach start?

Usually from the Santa Cecília refuge parking, taking the Camí de l'Arrel toward the monastery and then a path up to the base of the spire — around 45 minutes. Full meeting details come with your booking confirmation.
</details>

    <details>
When is the best time to climb it?

Spring and autumn are ideal. The route faces north-east, which makes it noticeably cooler than the south-facing Via Normal — a real advantage in warm weather, and a reason it's often the better choice in late spring. Summer is also recommended as we can play with daylight and go for an early start or later in the day to climb in the shade. Winter is possible on still, sunny days, though the north-east aspect stays cold.
</details>

    <details>
What do I need to bring?

Your own climbing shoes if you have them, comfortable clothes, sturdy footwear for the approach, and plenty of water and food for a long day. All technical equipment is provided, and we have loan climbing shoes if you need them.
</details>

    <details>
What happens if the weather is bad?

Conglomerate is unsafe when wet, so we don't climb in rain, and Montserrat's wind is its own reason to reschedule on an exposed arête. If the forecast turns we'll contact you in advance and either move the date or refund you in full.
</details>

Not sure this is the one?

If you'd rather a shorter day on the same summit, the Via Normal gets you there in three pitches with a great deal of history.
