A total of 385 metres of climbing that never gets hard but never stops being spectacular.<\/p>\n\n      <p>The line runs along the edge of the ridge, so you're on the knife's edge almost the whole way, with air on both sides and the river below. The grade is IV+, which means the moves are comfortable for anyone who climbs. The memorable part is the position, the length, and the fact that you're moving through genuine mountain terrain! <\/p>\n\n      <div class=\"callout warn\">\n        <div class=\"tag\">\u26a0 One bolt per pitch<\/div>\n        <p>This is old-school classic climbing. Across the eight pitches there is roughly one fixed bolt per pitch; everything else is protected with the gear your guide places in the limestone. Climbed independently it demands real trad experience. Climbed with us, your guide will place every piece and builds every belay.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n\n      <h3>Vultures, and why this valley is special<\/h3>\n      <p>Al\u00f2s de Balaguer sits in one of Catalunya's most important griffon vulture areas, and on a good day you will climb with them. Not distant specks, birds with nearly three metres of wingspan riding the thermals off the crest, often close enough to hear the air over their feathers. Due to them nesting in the surrounding walls, climbing in the area is regulated and some months of the winter may be restricted. Let us know and we can find an alternative route.<\/p>\n\n      <h3>Section by section<\/h3>\n      <div class=\"steps\">\n        <div class=\"step\"><div class=\"n\">Approach<\/div><p>A walk of around 40 minutes from the small parking at the end of the track, past the walkways above the gorge, to the characteristic diagonal slab that marks the start of the route.<\/p><\/div>\n        <div class=\"step\"><div class=\"n\">The lower pitches<\/div><p>Onto the ridge via the opening slab, easing into the rhythm of the ridge \u2014 climbing that is straightforward in itself but immediately exposed.<\/p><\/div>\n        <div class=\"step\"><div class=\"n\">Along the knife's edge<\/div><p>Pitch after pitch along the true edge of the ridge, with the Segre river below on one side and the valley opening on the other. Good limestone, generous holds, and exposure that keeps giving.<\/p><\/div>\n        <div class=\"step\"><div class=\"n\">The IV+ sections<\/div><p>A handful of short steeper steps where the ridge throws up a small tower\/wall. Never desperate, but enough to keep you honest.<\/p><\/div>\n        <div class=\"step\"><div class=\"n\">The summit<\/div><p>Out onto the top of the Pic de Castellas, with the whole Noguera country laid out and the Segre river at base of the valley.<\/p><\/div>\n        <div class=\"step\"><div class=\"n\">Descent<\/div><p>Rappel off the ridge and then on foot, back to the parking \u2014 managed by your guide, and a good deal easier than the way up.<\/p><\/div>\n      <\/div>\n\n      <h3>Who it suits<\/h3>\n      <p>Anyone comfortable seconding IV+ who wants a big day in mountain terrain. You do not need trad experience as your guide places all the protection. The route is eight pitches long, so it suits better reasonably fit people happy to mover over sustained exposure.
