Local climbers describe the Coma de Gelis as having sabor alpí — an alpine flavour — and they're right: it feels like a mountain route transplanted into the Noguera.

It's 330 metres of climbing at grade V, opened in September 1960 by Cortés, Farré and Mallol of the Centre Excursionista de Lleida, and it has stayed almost exactly as they left it. The tower itself, at 424 metres, is a genuinely famous silhouette in Catalunya — it appeared on the poster for the referendum of 1 October 2017.

⚠ Not a single bolt on the entire route

This is what makes the Coma de Gelis special and what makes it serious. There are no expansion bolts and no glue-ins anywhere: protection is old pitons, threads around rock bridges, and slings around the juniper trees growing out of the ridge — plus whatever you place yourself. Guidebooks are blunt about it: straightforward for people used to adventure terrain, and not for beginners. With a guide leading and protecting every pitch, it becomes a route you can enjoy rather than one you have to be ready for.

Section by section

Approach · 15 min

From the parking beside the bridge, a path skirts the reservoir to a gap between two large blocks.
The seasonal closure, what "no bolts" means for you, and the practicalities of a classic ridge.

The route

    <details>
What does "no bolts at all" actually mean?

Exactly that — there are no expansion bolts and no glued anchors anywhere on the ridge. Protection comes from old pitons left by earlier parties, threads around natural rock bridges, slings around the junipers growing on the crest, and gear placed in cracks. It's how climbing was done before bolts, and it's why the route feels so different from a modern line.
</details>

    <details>
Is that dangerous?

It's serious rather than dangerous, and the distinction matters. Guidebooks say plainly that this is straightforward for people used to adventure terrain and not suitable for beginners — because judging a thread or an old piton is a real skill. With a guide leading and protecting every pitch, that judgement is being made by someone who does it for a living, which is precisely what makes the route accessible to you.
</details>

    <details>
Which is the best part?

The third pitch, without much disagreement among people who've climbed it. Easy moves in a genuinely airy position along the crest, with the reservoir directly below and the great walls of the Formiguera, the Cilindre and the Paret de l'Ós filling the view opposite.
</details>

    <details>
And the hardest?

The last one. It begins with a slightly loose chimney and a grade V move within the first five metres, which is a demanding way to finish a long day. After that it eases quickly to the summit.
</details>

    <details>
Why do people call it alpine?

Because it feels like a mountain route rather than a crag route: a long ridge, constant exposure, natural protection, a summit at the end and a rappel to get down — but at 424 metres, an hour and a half from Barcelona, and with a fifteen-minute approach. It's an unusually accessible way to get the alpine experience.
</details>

The closure

    <details>
Why is the route closed part of the year?

It sits within a bird protection area, and climbing is prohibited during the nesting season to avoid disturbing the birds. This is standard across many Catalan crags and it's not negotiable — it's a legal restriction, and one worth respecting on its own terms.
</details>

    <details>
When exactly is it closed?

Published sources give different windows, which is why we verify the current dates with the authorities. We only offer dates when the route is legally open, so anything you can book here is a date we've checked. If you're planning around a specific weekend, message us and we'll confirm.
</details>

    <details>
When is the best time to climb it?

Early summer, autumn and early winter,both because of the closure and because the Noguera is fiercely hot in summer with no shade on the crest. Cold clear days are ideal — parties report climbing it comfortably with the car park at zero degrees, because the ridge catches the sun.
</details>

Practical

    <details>
What level do I need?

Comfortable seconding grade V, and genuinely happy with exposure over a long day. You don't need trad or multi-pitch experience — your guide leads every pitch, places all the protection and manages the rappel. What matters is being steady on rock and not troubled by air beneath you for several hours.
</details>

    <details>
How long is the approach?

Fifteen minutes, which is part of the appeal. From the parking beside the bridge a path skirts the reservoir to a gap between two blocks where the route begins. You can see the whole ridge, with the flag on its summit, from the car.
</details>

    <details>
Where do I park?

Beside the road just before the bridge into Sant Llorenç de Montgai, not in the village itself — parking in the village risks a fine. Full meeting details come with your booking confirmation.
</details>

    <details>
How do I get there from Barcelona?

Around an hour and a half: the A-2 past Tàrrega, then toward Balaguer, across the Segre, and the LV-9047 to Sant Llorenç de Montgai.
</details>

    <details>
What should I bring?

Your own climbing shoes if you have them, approach shoes, water, food, and sun protection — there's no shade on the ridge. All technical equipment is provided, we will give you a specific list of the what you need to bring prior to the activity.
</details>

    <details>
What happens if the weather is bad?

We reschedule or refund. The rock is generally sound but needs care, and a route protected by threads and old pitons is not somewhere to be in wind or wet. Given the seasonal closure the available window is narrow, so we'll work with you to find another date within it.
</details>

Not sure this is the one?

If you'd like a longer ridge in the same region with a little more protection, the Cresta del Serrat del Poll is eight pitches above the Segre.
