It takes the most logical line up the spur of the Roc de Ponent, following good cracks and clean dihedrals through a characteristic natural window, and finishes at a large iron cross on the summit that doubles as the final belay.

⚠ A trad climbing adventure

There are a handful of old pitons on the first two pitches and essentially nothing after that.
Granite in Tarragona, climbing without bolts, and what a day in the Poblet valley involves.

The route

    <details>
There's granite in Tarragona?

There is, and it surprises everyone. In the Muntanyes de Prades near Poblet, holds a set of granite towers and spurs that feel completely out of place this far south. Climbers consistently say the same thing: you'd think you were in the Pyrenees if it weren't for the holm oak forest around you.
</details>

    <details>
What makes the Aresta GER special?

It's the great classic of the valley and, at around 185 metres, the longest route in the whole Muntanyes de Prades. Opened in 1972 by Ramon Bruno and Quim Miralles from Reus, it takes the most logical line up the spur, through good cracks and dihedrals and a characteristic natural window, finishing at the iron cross on the summit.
</details>

    <details>
Is it really unequipped?

Almost entirely. There are a few old pitons on the first two pitches and essentially nothing above that — everything else is nuts, cams and long slings around the trees on the ledges.
</details>

    <details>
How hard is it, honestly?

Very approachable for grade V. Sources agree the climbing isn't difficult and that its friendliness is part of the charm — one climber wrote that not being too hard lets you enjoy the rock twice as much. The seriousness comes from the absence of fixed protection, not from the moves.
</details>

    <details>
Do we rappel to get down?

No, and it's one of the nicest things about the route. From the cross you walk along the back of the Roc de Ponent, then take a path down to the right and a scree slope back to the base. A straightforward end to a long day.
</details>

Are you ready?

    <details>
Do I need trad experience?

Not to climb it with us. Your guide leads every pitch, places all the protection and builds every belay — you second. If you want to learn to protect routes like this yourself, this is exactly the terrain our Trad Climbing Course prepares you for, and the GER is a natural objective afterwards.
</details>

    <details>
What level do I need?

Comfortable seconding grade V, and happy on rock for a full day. Granite climbs differently from limestone or conglomerate — more friction, more crack technique, more trusting your feet — so expect the style to feel unfamiliar at first even if the grade doesn't.
</details>

    <details>
How fit do I need to be?

Moderately. The approach involves a scree slope and takes a while but isn't long, the climbing is five or six pitches, and the descent is on foot. It's a full day but not a punishing one.
</details>

Practical

    <details>
Where exactly is it?

Inside the Paratge Natural de Poblet, reached from the T-700 between Poblet and Prades. Around an hour and three quarters from Barcelona via the AP-2 and Montblanc. Full meeting details come with your booking.
</details>

    <details>
When is the best time to climb it?

Spring and autumn. Summer in the Conca de Barberà is hot, though the valley holds some shade and the forest helps. Winter days can be very pleasant when the sun is out — parties report comfortable temperatures well into the cold months.
</details>

    <details>
Is there anything else to do nearby?

Plenty. The monastery of Poblet — a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991 — is minutes away, and the Conca de Barberà is serious wine country. The approach itself follows a marked geological trail, and there are old mining paths through the valley. It makes an excellent weekend rather than just a climbing day.
</details>

    <details>
What should I bring?

Your own climbing shoes if you have them — flatter shoes suit granite cracks better than aggressive ones — plus approach shoes for the scree, water, food and sun protection. All technical equipment including the full rack is provided.
</details>

    <details>
What happens if the weather is bad?

We reschedule or refund, no questions asked. Granite is unpleasant and unsafe when wet, and a route protected almost entirely by placed gear isn't somewhere to be in poor conditions.
</details>

Not sure this is the one?

For the same unbolted, classic character on limestone, the Cresta de la Coma de Gelis rises straight out of a reservoir in La Noguera.
