We start with what a harness does and how to tie in, and by the end of day two you'll have climbed real routes on real rock and understood how the whole system keeps you safe. Every single person on the course started exactly where you are, including the guide.

And if you already climb indoors — this is the course that closes the gap. Gym climbing gives you the movement, the fitness and the confidence on holds. What it doesn't give you is anchor building, cleaning a route, reading rock that has no coloured holds, understanding where bolts are and aren't, or the judgement to know when conditions aren't right. Those are the missing pieces, and they're the reason a lot of strong indoor climbers never make it outside.

★ What actually changes outdoors

There are no coloured holds, so you read the rock itself. The bolts are where the route needed them, not every metre and a half. Nobody has set up the anchor for you, and nobody will clean it afterwards. The weather matters, the rock quality matters, and there's an etiquette to sharing a crag. None of it is difficult — but all of it has to be learned from someone, and that's exactly what these two days are.

What You'll Learn

Two days, deliberately sequenced: everything on day one is a foundation for something on day two.

Day one — the foundations

Equipment

Harness, shoes, helmet, rope, quickdraws, belay device: what each thing does, why it's built the way it is, and how to check it before you trust it.

Knots & tying in

The figure-eight, properly, until you can tie it without thinking. Taking in, paying out and lowering someone smoothly. This is the skill your climbing partner's safety depends on, and we spend real time on it.

Clipping techniques

It is super important to know how to clip the quickdraws efficiently and quickly. We will learn the best ways to do it and put it into practice.

Lead Climbing

What changes when you're above the bolt: rope management, body positioning, and the basics of falling.

Communication

The standard calls, why they exist, and what to do when you can't hear each other — which happens more often than you'd think.

Day two — toward independence

Anchors

Setting up a safe top-rope anchor and, just as importantly, taking it down cleanly. The thing indoor climbers have never had to think about.

Lead falling and soft catches

We will practice lead falls and understand how to fall. Equally as important or more, the belayer must know how to secure the climber in case of a fall. Therefore, we will practice and explain different scenarios so that you know how to react on every condition. A first taste rather than a mastery, and only if you're ready for it.

Cleaning a route

Threading the anchor, lowering off, retrieving your gear. Get this wrong and it's the most dangerous moment of a climbing day, which is why we drill it carefully.

Reading & judgement

Choosing a route that suits you, spotting a worn bolt, reading the weather, understanding when a crag is in condition and when to go somewhere else.

Crag etiquette

Sharing space, protecting the rock and the access, not dropping things on people below. Almost everyone arrives on their own or in a pair, nobody knows what they're doing at the start, and there's no grade anyone is expected to reach. FAQs

Everything first-timers ask — including the things people feel awkward asking out loud.

Am I the right person for this?

    <details>
Do I need any experience at all?

None. This course assumes you've never touched a rope and starts from there — what a harness does, how to tie in, how the system keeps you safe. Around a quarter of every group has never climbed anywhere, indoors or out. Nobody will be surprised or impatient, least of all your guide.
</details>

    <details>
I climb indoors already. Is this too basic for me?

No, and it's one of the two main reasons people book. Gym climbing gives you the movement and the fitness; what it doesn't give you is anchor building, cleaning a route, reading rock with no coloured holds, or judging whether a crag is in condition. Those are exactly the missing pieces, and they're why a lot of strong indoor climbers never get outside.
</details>

    <details>
Am I fit enough?

Almost certainly. There's no minimum grade and no fitness test — you'll climb routes chosen for you, and easy routes outdoors are genuinely easy. If you can walk uphill for twenty minutes and manage a flight of stairs without stopping, you'll be fine. Technique matters far more than strength at this stage, which is good news for most beginners.
</details>

    <details>
Am I too old to start?

Very unlikely. We regularly teach people in their fifties and sixties, and climbing is far kinder to beginners than most sports because you set your own difficulty. Body awareness and patience often make older beginners better students than younger ones. If you have a specific injury or condition, tell us when you book and we'll adapt.
</details>

    <details>
What if I'm afraid of heights?

Most people are, to some degree, and it doesn't stop them climbing. Being on a rope changes the feeling considerably — you're held, and you find that out on the first route. We start low, go at your pace, and nobody is pushed higher than they want. Plenty of people who were nervous on day one lead a route by the end of day two.
</details>

Practical

    <details>
Do I need a climbing partner?

No. Most people come alone, and the course is set up for that — you'll climb and belay with the group and the guide. Coming with a friend or a partner is lovely if you have one, mainly because you'll have someone to climb with afterwards, which is the real barrier to continuing.
</details>

    <details>
Do I need to buy any equipment?

Nothing at all. Rope, harness, helmet, quickdraws and belay device are provided, and we have loan climbing shoes if you don't have your own. If you decide to buy kit afterwards, the end of the course is the ideal moment to ask what's actually worth spending money on and what can wait.
</details>

    <details>
What should I bring?

Comfortable clothes you can move in, trainers or approach shoes for the walk in, plenty of water, food for the day, and sun protection. Your own climbing shoes if you have them. Tie long hair back and leave rings and dangling jewellery at home.
</details>

    <details>
Where does the course take place?

At crags around Barcelona or Catalonia, chosen for teaching rather than scenery — good solid anchors, sensible angles, and a range of easy routes close together so nobody spends the day walking. The exact location is confirmed a few days beforehand, because we pick it for the conditions.
</details>

    <details>
Are the two days consecutive?

Usually, and it works better that way — day two builds directly on day one and the skills are much fresher. If consecutive days don't fit your schedule, ask us; we can sometimes split them across two weekends, though you'll spend a little of day two revisiting.
</details>

    <details>
Can teenagers or children join?

Teenagers, often yes — climbing suits them well and they usually learn fast. Younger children are better served by our Family Climbing Day, which is designed around them rather than around adult instruction. Tell us ages when you enquire and we'll say honestly which is the better fit.
</details>

Afterwards

    <details>
Will I be able to climb on my own after this?

You'll be able to climb outdoors safely on bolted single-pitch routes with a competent partner — tie in, belay, set up and clean a top-rope, and make sensible decisions. That's a real milestone. Full independence, including leading confidently and judging unfamiliar crags alone, comes with mileage afterwards, and we'll tell you plainly what to practise to get there.
</details>

    <details>
What's the next step after this course?

Climb. Genuinely — the best thing you can do is get out repeatedly and consolidate. When you're leading and want to climb better, the Sport Climbing Improvement day works on falling, clipping and technique. When you want to climb long routes with real summits, the Multi-Pitch Course is the natural progression.
</details>

    <details>
How do I find people to climb with afterwards?

The honest answer is that this is the hardest part, not the skills. Climbing gyms in Barcelona are the usual route in, and people who take this course together often stay in touch and keep climbing together — it happens more than you'd expect. We're also happy to point you toward local clubs and meet-ups.
</details>

    <details>
Can I book it privately?

Yes, for one person or a small group, and it means the whole pace adapts to you. It's a good option if you're particularly nervous, if you want to learn alongside a specific partner, or if your schedule doesn't match our open dates.
</details>

    <details>
What happens if the weather is bad?

We reschedule or refund, no questions asked. We don't teach on wet rock — it's unpleasant and unsafe, and a first experience of climbing outdoors should be neither. Catalunya has enough microclimates that we can often just move to a different crag rather than cancel.
</details>

Not sure this is the one?

If you'd rather just have a great day out than learn the systems, book a guided climb and we'll do the technical work for you.
