They plateau because they're afraid of falling, they clip from bad positions, they don't read the route before leaving the ground, and their feet are doing about half the work they could be doing.

Those four things are all completely fixable, and none of them are trained by simply climbing more. That's the frustrating part: you can climb twice a week for two years, get fitter, and stay on exactly the same grade — because volume doesn't fix technique or fear. It just makes you better at what you already do.

This is one day dedicated to the parts of sport climbing nobody teaches you. It's coaching rather than guiding: you'll be watched, filmed if useful, given specific feedback, and asked to practise things that feel uncomfortable. Most people leave climbing a grade harder — or, more accurately, leave able to climb the grade they were already physically capable of.

★ The single biggest unlock: falling

Most climbers have never taken a deliberate, controlled fall — so every time they get above a bolt, some part of them is climbing to avoid falling rather than climbing to succeed. That tension costs grip strength, ruins footwork and makes you clip from desperate positions. We work through it progressively, from tiny falls to real ones, and it changes how the rest of the day feels.

What You'll Work On

Falling & the mental game

Progressive fall practice in a safe, controlled setting, from clipped-above to real lead falls. Alongside it: breathing, committing to a move instead of hovering, recognising when fear is information and when it's just noise, and the difference between onsighting and projecting mentally.

Clipping tactics

Where to clip from and — just as importantly — where not to. Clipping from good holds rather than the desperate ones, avoiding back-clips and Z-clips, deciding when to skip a bolt and when absolutely not to, and how to clip fast enough that it stops costing you the route.

Route reading

Reading a line from the ground: identifying the crux, spotting the rests, planning where you'll clip, and choosing a sequence before you're pumped and improvising. Then checking it against what actually happened, which is where the learning is.

Footwork & movement

Precision over power: quiet feet, trusting smears, edging properly, using your hips, and getting weight off your arms. Most climbers lose more energy through sloppy feet than through any weakness in their fingers.

Resting & tactics

Finding and using rests, shaking out efficiently, pacing a route rather than sprinting it, warming up so the first route isn't wasted, and the tactics of working a project versus going for an onsight.

Belaying — because it's half the system

If you're coming with a partner, we'll work on their side too: giving a soft, dynamic catch, positioning, paying out fast without slack disasters. A good belayer makes a climber braver, and most fear of falling is partly fear of a bad catch.

How the Day Runs

One day, structured so that the technical work happens while you're fresh and the applying happens once it's in your body.

Morning · warm-up

We meet at the crag, warm up properly — most people don't — and climb a route or two while your coach watches how you actually move. FAQs

Whether you're ready, what the falling practice actually involves, and what to expect from a day of coaching rather than climbing.

Is this for me?

    <details>
What level do I need to be?

You need to be leading — indoors or outdoors — but the grade genuinely doesn't matter. Someone leading 5+ and someone leading 6c have exactly the same four problems in different proportions: fear, clipping, reading and feet. The day is built around whatever shows up in your climbing, not around a grade. If you've only ever top-roped, start with the Sport Climbing Introduction instead.
</details>

    <details>
I only lead indoors. Can I come?

Yes, and you'll get a lot out of it. Gym leading builds the movement and the clipping motion, but rock has no coloured holds, the bolts are where the route needed them rather than every 1.5 metres, and the falling feels different. Plenty of people take this day precisely to convert indoor leading into outdoor leading.
</details>

    <details>
Will this actually make me climb harder?

Usually, yes — but not because you get stronger in a day. What tends to happen is that you stop losing a grade to fear, wasted energy and bad clipping positions, and start climbing at the level you were already physically capable of. Some people feel it immediately; for most it shows up over the following few weeks as the habits settle.
</details>

    <details>
Is one day really enough?

It's enough to change how you climb, not enough to make it permanent on its own. The day ends with an honest debrief and a plan for what to practise, because the real gains come from applying it over the following month. Some climbers take this day once a season as a reset; others follow it with the Multi-Pitch Course once their leading is solid.
</details>

The falling practice

    <details>
Will you make me fall?

No. Nobody is pushed off anything, literally or otherwise. We start far smaller than you expect — often with your weight already on the rope — and go only as far as you're willing to on the day. Some people take a full lead fall by the afternoon and some don't, and both are fine. The progression matters more than the endpoint.
</details>

    <details>
I'm genuinely scared of falling. Is that normal?

It's the single most common thing we hear, and it's completely rational — you're being asked to let go on purpose. Almost every climber who hasn't trained it feels the same, including plenty who climb hard. Naming it is the start of fixing it. The practice is progressive, done at your pace, on safe ground with a coach who has done this hundreds of times.
</details>

    <details>
Is fall practice safe?

Done properly, yes. We choose a wall with clean fall lines and no ledges, control exactly where you fall from, and manage the belay ourselves or coach your partner through a soft catch. The equipment is rated far beyond what's required. The point is to teach your body that a lead fall is undramatic, which it usually is — the fear is real, the danger mostly isn't.
</details>

Practical

    <details>
Do I need a climbing partner?

No — come alone and you'll climb with your coach and the rest of the group. That said, bringing your regular partner is genuinely valuable, because we can work on the belaying side too. A soft, attentive catch is half of why a climber feels able to commit, and most partners have never been coached on it.
</details>

    <details>
Can I book it privately?

Yes, for one person or a small group, and it's the most focused version of the day — the whole session shapes itself around one climber's specific weaknesses. It costs more per person than joining a group, but if you've been stuck on a grade for a year it's the fastest way to find out why.
</details>

    <details>
Do I need my own gear?

Rope, quickdraws, harness and helmet are all provided. Bring your own climbing shoes if you have them — comfort and precision both matter for a full day of technique work, and borrowed shoes make footwork drills harder than they need to be. We have loaner pairs if not.
</details>

    <details>
Where does it take place?

At crags around Barcelona chosen for teaching rather than for the view — good bolting, clean fall zones, a range of grades close together so we can move between drills and real routes without walking half an hour. The exact crag is confirmed close to the date, because conditions decide.
</details>

    <details>
What should I bring?

Climbing shoes if you have them, comfortable clothes you can move in, plenty of water, food for the day, and sun protection. A notebook is genuinely useful — people forget the specific feedback within days, and the ones who write it down are the ones who keep improving.
</details>

    <details>
What happens if the weather is bad?

We reschedule or refund, no questions asked. Wet rock makes technique work pointless and fall practice unwise. Catalunya has enough microclimates that we can often just move to a different crag rather than cancel, so we'll usually have a plan before you do.
</details>

Not sure this is the one?

If you don't lead yet, or you've only climbed indoors, start with the Sport Climbing Introduction.
