Most classic Catalan lines are easier, move for move, than the sport routes you already lead. What changes is everything around the climbing — and that's what stops people.

On a single-pitch route the ground is always there. If something goes wrong you lower off and walk away. A hundred and fifty metres up a wall, that option disappears. You're managing two ropes instead of one, building and trusting your own anchors, belaying a partner from above rather than below, swapping roles on a ledge the size of a bookshelf, reading a topo you can't fully see, and committing to a descent that may be several rappels down an overhanging face.

None of that is difficult in itself. All of it has to be smooth, in the right order, without thinking, while you're tired and the light is going. That's what these two days build — not strength, but a system you can run automatically.

★ The real skill is transitions

Watch an experienced pair on a multi-pitch route and the climbing isn't what's impressive — it's what happens at each belay. Arriving, clipping in, taking over the rope, restacking, swapping the rack, and being ready to climb again, all in a couple of minutes without a word wasted. Slow transitions are why parties get benighted on routes they could climb in three hours. We drill them until they're boring.

What You'll Learn

Two days, sequenced so that day one gives you the tools and day two makes you use them on a real route.

Day one — the systems, on the ground and at the crag

Planning & topos

Reading a topo properly: identifying the line, the pitch lengths, the crux, the descent, and the critical points where a route commits you. <details>
What level do I need to be at?

You should be leading sport routes at around V or 5 comfortably outdoors, and belaying confidently. The climbing on classic multi-pitch routes is usually easier than that — the demand is on the systems, not the grade. If you're not leading outdoors yet, do the Sport Climbing Introduction first and get some mileage before coming back to this.
</details>

    <details>
Is multi-pitch harder than sport climbing?

The climbing usually isn't — most classic Catalan multi-pitch lines are graded well below what a competent sport climber leads. What's harder is everything around it: two ropes, your own anchors, belaying from above, transitions on tiny ledges, and a descent you have to plan. That's the whole reason this course exists.
</details>

    <details>
Do I need to be able to lead, or can I just second?

You can take the course as a second and get a great deal from it — most of the systems work matters whether you're leading or not. But if your goal is to climb multi-pitch routes with a partner rather than with a guide, one of you needs to lead, and the course is far more valuable if that's you.
</details>

    <details>
How fit do I need to be?

Less than people expect. Multi-pitch days are long rather than intense, with a lot of standing at belays. What matters more is being able to keep making good decisions when you're tired and it's late — which is partly fitness and mostly practice. If you can climb all day at a crag, you're fine.
</details>

The course

    <details>
What does the two-day structure look like?

Day one is skills: topos, racking, anchors, belaying from above, rope management and rappelling, drilled at a crag where we can repeat things quickly. Day two is a real route, typically two or three pitches and sometimes four or five if the group is moving well, where you run the system with your guide alongside rather than in front.
</details>

    <details>
Will I actually lead a pitch?

Usually yes on day two, on terrain well within your grade, with your guide managing the wider safety. Leading a pitch, building the belay and bringing your partner up is the moment the whole course clicks. That said, it depends on the group and the conditions, and nobody is pushed into leading before they're ready.
</details>

    <details>
Where does it take place?

Mostly Montserrat — forty-five minutes from Barcelona, hundreds of bolted multi-pitch routes, and easy lines beside hard ones, which is exactly what a teaching venue needs. Depending on season and conditions we also use the bigger limestone walls inland: Terradets, Vilanova de Meià, Sant Llorenç de Montgai and Tivissa.
</details>

    <details>
Why maximum four people?

Because everyone needs to build every anchor, not watch someone else build one. Multi-pitch skills are learned by doing them repeatedly with someone correcting you, and that doesn't scale. Four is the most a guide can genuinely supervise on a wall.
</details>

Afterwards

    <details>
Will I be able to climb multi-pitch on my own?

With a competent partner, on straightforward bolted routes, yes — that's the goal and it's realistic in two days. Long committing routes, unbolted terrain and complex descents need more mileage. The honest sequence is: take the course, then climb easy routes repeatedly until the systems are boring, then step up.
</details>

    <details>
What should I climb first afterwards?

Something short, well-bolted, well-documented and easy for you — three pitches you could climb in your sleep, so all your attention goes to the systems rather than the moves. Montserrat is full of exactly that. We'll suggest specific routes for your level in the debrief.
</details>

    <details>
Should I do this or the trad course?

This one first, without question. Multi-pitch teaches you to run a long day on bolted routes; trad teaches you to protect a route where there are no bolts. Trad on a multi-pitch route means doing both at once, which is a lot for one course. Nearly everyone does them in this order.
</details>

    <details>
Is self-rescue worth adding?

Once you're actually climbing multi-pitch routes, genuinely yes. Escaping a belay, ascending a rope or lowering an injured partner are not things you can improvise 100 metres up, and the Self-Rescue Course is just two days. Most people do it a season after starting multi-pitch, once they understand why it matters.
</details>

Practical

    <details>
Do I need my own gear?

Yes and no. Ropes, hardware, harness and helmet are provided. We will give you a small list of equipment we consider is needed for the course that you will always use for climbing. Bring your own climbing shoes if you have them, otherwise we can loan them to you. If you're planning to buy a multi-pitch rack, the course is the ideal time to ask what's worth owning — you'll have handled it all by the end.
</details>

    <details>
Can I do it with my climbing partner?

Ideally, yes. Two people who learn the same systems together, and then use them together every weekend, retain far more than someone who learns alone. If you have a regular partner, bringing them is the single best thing you can do for how much of this sticks.
</details>

    <details>
What happens if the weather is bad?

We reschedule or refund, no questions asked. A fair amount of day one — ropework, anchors, transitions — can be taught on sheltered ground if the forecast is marginal, so we'll often have a workable plan. Day two needs dry rock, and we won't fake it.
</details>

Not sure this is the one?

If you're not leading outdoors yet, start with the Sport Climbing Introduction.
