On a trad route, every piece is yours — you choose it, you place it, and you find out whether you were right only if you fall. That shift is the single biggest step in a climber's development, and it changes how you see rock permanently.

It also opens up terrain you simply cannot otherwise reach. Enormous amounts of Catalunya's best climbing has no bolts at all: the granite ridges of the Pyrenees, the classic crests, lines like the Aresta GER on pink granite with nothing fixed on it whatsoever. Those routes aren't harder than what you already climb — they're just closed to you until you can protect yourself.

And there's a quieter benefit that experienced climbers talk about more than the access: trad makes you a better climber on everything. When your protection depends on your own judgement, you read rock differently, you climb more deliberately, and you develop the kind of mountain sense that no amount of bolted mileage produces.

★ The skill is judgement, not strength

Anyone can wedge a cam into a crack. The actual skill is knowing whether the placement will hold, whether the rock around it is solid, whether it will walk or lift out as the rope moves, and whether three mediocre pieces are better than one good one. That judgement can't be read in a book or watched on a video — it's built by placing gear repeatedly with someone experienced telling you what's wrong with it. That's what these two days are.

What You'll Learn

Day one builds the toolkit on accessible ground.
What trad actually is, whether you're ready for it, and what two days can honestly give you.

Understanding trad

    <details>
What is trad climbing?

Traditional climbing means protecting the route yourself with removable gear — cams, nuts and slings placed into cracks and constrictions as you climb, and taken out by your second afterwards — rather than clipping bolts someone drilled into the rock. Nothing is left behind. It's how climbing was done before bolts, and it's still the only way to climb enormous amounts of mountain terrain.
</details>

    <details>
Why bother, if bolted routes exist?

Two reasons. Access: vast amounts of Catalunya's best climbing has no bolts at all, including the granite ridges and classic crests of the Pre-Pyrenees. And judgement: when your protection depends entirely on decisions you make, you read rock differently and climb more deliberately. Most experienced climbers say trad made them better on everything, including sport.
</details>

    <details>
Is trad climbing more dangerous?

It has a wider margin for human error, which is a different thing. A bolt is either good or it isn't; a placement is only as good as the person who put it in. Well-protected trad on solid rock, led within your ability, is a controlled activity — which is precisely why it's worth learning properly from someone rather than working it out alone.
</details>

    <details>
What's semi-bolted?

A route with some fixed protection — often the belays, or the hardest sections — but where you place your own gear for much of the climbing. It's the natural stepping stone between fully bolted routes and fully clean ones, and it's usually where we go on day two.
</details>

Am I ready?

    <details>
What experience do I need?

You should be comfortable on bolted multi-pitch routes: building anchors, managing ropes, transitions and rappels. Trad routes are nearly always multi-pitch, so if the multi-pitch system is still new to you, you'd be learning two demanding things at once. Our Multi-Pitch Course is the recommended precursor and almost everyone does them in that order.
</details>

    <details>
What grade do I need to climb?

Lower than you'd think. Day two is deliberately on terrain well within your ability, because the challenge is the protection, not the moves — placing gear while pumped on something at your limit is not how anyone should learn. If you lead bolted multi-pitch comfortably, your grade is fine.
</details>

    <details>
Can I take this without the multi-pitch course?

If you already climb bolted multi-pitch confidently — through experience rather than our course — then yes, absolutely. What matters is the skill, not where you learned it. But if you've only climbed single-pitch sport routes, this isn't the right next step and we'll say so when you ask.
</details>

The course

    <details>
How much gear will I actually place?

A great deal, deliberately. Day one is built around volume — placements at ground level and on easy terrain where you can do dozens in a morning and have every one assessed. Judgement comes from repetition with feedback, not from explanation, so we prioritise the number of pieces you place over the amount of climbing you do.
</details>

    <details>
Will I lead a trad route?

Usually on day two, on ground well within your grade and with your guide managing the wider safety. Placing your own protection and committing above it is the moment the course means something. That said, it depends on the group and on how day one went — nobody is put on the sharp end before they're ready.
</details>

    <details>
Do you cover aid climbing?

A short introduction, yes. Weighting a placement directly is the quickest way to genuinely understand what gear holds and what it doesn't, and it's a practical skill the day a move is beyond you and you still need to get past it. It isn't the focus of the course, but it earns its half-hour.
</details>

    <details>
What about getting down?

Covered properly, because it matters more on trad than anywhere else. Routes without bolts often have no fixed rappel stations, so we cover building improvised rappels, deciding what you're willing to leave behind, and retreating safely from partway up a route — which is a real possibility on unbolted terrain and shouldn't be improvised for the first time in bad weather.
</details>

Afterwards & practical

    <details>
Will I be able to lead trad after two days?

Easy, well-protected trad routes with a competent partner, yes. But we'll be straight with you: trad judgement matures over seasons, not days. What the course gives you is a sound foundation and — just as importantly — an accurate sense of what you don't yet know. That awareness is what keeps new trad leaders safe.
</details>

    <details>
Should I buy my own rack?

Not before the course. Come, use ours, handle everything, and by the end you'll know what you actually want and in what order to buy it. A trad rack is a serious investment and most people's first purchases are the wrong ones. We'll give you honest advice at the debrief.
</details>

    <details>
Do I need my own gear?

No. A full rack — cams, nuts, slings, hardware — plus ropes, harness and helmet are all provided. Bring your own climbing shoes if you have them; crack climbing is more comfortable in shoes that aren't aggressively downturned, so a flatter pair is worth having if you own one.
</details>

    <details>
Can I do it with my climbing partner?

Strongly recommended. Trad is a partnership activity in a way sport climbing isn't — you're relying on each other's judgement, not on the same bolts. Two people who learn to place and assess gear together, and then use it together, progress far faster than someone learning alone.
</details>

    <details>
What happens if the weather is bad?

We reschedule or refund, no questions asked. Much of day one — racking, placements, anchors — can be taught on sheltered ground if the forecast is marginal, so we'll usually find a way to run it. Day two needs dry rock, and unbolted routes especially so.
</details>

Not sure this is the one?

If you're not yet fluent on bolted multi-pitch, start with the Multi-Pitch Course — it's the recommended precursor.
