A block comes down and hits them. They're hanging on the rope below you, not moving, and the whole weight of the system is on your belay device. What do you do in the next three minutes?

Almost every climber, asked that question honestly, doesn't know. Not because they're careless — because nothing in normal climbing teaches it. You can lead confidently for years, build perfect anchors, climb hard routes, and still have no idea how to get your hands free of a loaded rope, let alone reach someone who can't help themselves.

That's the gap this day fills. It isn't about heroics or big mountain rescue; it's about a small set of manoeuvres, done with the gear already on your harness, that turn a genuine emergency into a manageable problem. Escaping a loaded belay. Getting up or down the rope to your partner. Transferring their weight to the anchor. Lowering both of you to the ground.

★ Why one day is enough — and why it has to be hands-on

These are not complicated techniques. They're fiddly ones, made of a handful of hitches combined in the right order, and they cannot be learned from a book or a video because the moment you're doing it for real your hands will be shaking and the sequence has to already be in them. So we spend the entire day with rope in your hands, repeating each system until it's boring. Reading about a belay escape and being able to do one are completely different things.

What You'll Learn

We start with a full demonstration — a complete rescue, start to finish, so you see where every piece fits — and then break it into parts and drill each one until you can do it unaided.

The foundations

Friction hitches

Prusik, klemheist and autoblock: how each grips, when to use which, and how to tie them one-handed with cold fingers. So it's worth being clear about how the day runs.

You will get things wrong. Repeatedly. You'll tie a munter backwards, forget which end of the rope you're loading, and build the same system three or four times before it sticks. That is not a sign you're doing badly; it's exactly what learning these skills looks like, for everyone, including the guides who teach them.

José runs this day the way he runs everything — slowly, and without ever making anyone feel behind. There's no clock, no comparison with the rest of the group, and no question too basic to ask twice. If a system takes you five attempts, you get five attempts. People consistently say afterwards that they'd expected to feel out of their depth and instead just felt looked after, which is precisely the point: nobody learns anything technical while they're embarrassed.

✓ What you'll be able to do afterwards

Escape a loaded belay, ascend or descend a rope to reach your partner, transfer their weight to an anchor, lower them, rappel with them, and haul a second past a hard move — using only the gear you already carry.
Whether you need this course, what a day of it feels like, and the honest limits of what self-rescue can do.

Do I need this?

    <details>
Who is this course for?

Anyone who climbs multi-pitch routes, or is about to start. Once you're above the ground with no easy way off, you and your partner are the rescue service for the first hour at least. It's also genuinely useful for single-pitch trad climbers and anyone heading into the mountains, but multi-pitch is where it stops being optional.
</details>

    <details>
Do I really need it if I only climb easy routes?

Probably more than you think. Most rescue situations don't come from hard climbing — they come from a rock coming down, a second who can't get past a move, a sudden storm, or a twisted ankle on a ledge. Easy routes are often longer, more remote and less frequented, which makes self-sufficiency more important rather than less.
</details>

    <details>
Should I do the multi-pitch course first?

Yes, if you haven't already. Self-rescue builds directly on the systems taught there — anchors, belaying from above, rappelling — and if those are still new, you'd be learning the foundation and the emergency version at the same time. Most people take the Multi-Pitch Course, climb for a season, then come to this once they understand why it matters.
</details>

    <details>
Is one day enough?

For the core skills, yes — escaping a belay, ascending and descending to a partner, load transfers, tandem rappels and simple hauling all fit into a well-run day. What one day can't do is make them permanent. These are perishable skills, and the honest advice we give everyone is to practise them at a crag a couple of times a year, which takes an hour and keeps them alive.
</details>

What the day is like

    <details>
I'm worried I'll look stupid. Is that going to happen?

You'll get things wrong — everyone does, including guides when they're learning something new. You'll tie a munter backwards and rebuild the same system three or four times. That's what learning this looks like, and José runs the day accordingly: no clock, no comparison with anyone else, and no question that's too basic to ask twice. The most common thing people say afterwards is that they'd expected to feel out of their depth and instead just felt looked after.
</details>

    <details>
How much of the day is hands-on?

Almost all of it. We start with a demonstration of a full rescue so you can see how the pieces fit, then break it apart and drill each element with rope in your hands. There's very little standing and listening. These techniques can't be learned by watching — the sequence has to end up in your hands, not your head.
</details>

    <details>
Is it physically demanding?

Not particularly. There's some effort in prusiking up a rope and in hauling, but this is a day of fiddly technical work rather than hard climbing. Patience and attention matter far more than strength. Most people find it mentally tiring rather than physically.
</details>

    <details>
Do I need to be a strong climber?

No. You need to be comfortable on a rope and familiar with anchors and belaying — the grade you climb is irrelevant. Some of the best students on this course are moderate climbers who've been doing long routes for years and finally decided to close the gap.
</details>

The skills

    <details>
What's the single most useful thing I'll learn?

Probably the munter-mule-overhand — a knot that lets you tie off a loaded rope and then release it again under load. Almost every rescue sequence passes through it. Beyond that, escaping the belay is the cornerstone: once your hands are free of a loaded system, most other problems become solvable.
</details>

    <details>
Will I learn hauling?

Yes, and it's the skill you're most likely to actually use. Not dramatic rescue hauling, but the assisted hoist — helping a second past a move they physically can't do. It happens on ordinary days with ordinary partners, and knowing it turns a stuck situation into a two-minute solution.
</details>

    <details>
Do these techniques always work?

No, and any course that implies otherwise is misleading you. Several depend on conditions you might not have — you can't descend safely without somewhere to build a reliable anchor, and you can't rope-solo up to an injured leader without gear for an upward-pulling anchor. Part of the day is learning which situations you can solve yourself and which mean calling for help immediately. Knowing the difference is a rescue skill in itself.
</details>

    <details>
Does it include first aid?

No — this is a rope-rescue course, focused on reaching your partner and getting them down. First aid is a separate discipline and deserves its own proper training. We'd strongly encourage a wilderness first aid course alongside this one; the two together are what actually make you useful in an emergency.
</details>

Practical

    <details>
Do I need a partner?

Not required, but ideal. Rescue skills are practised in pairs — you'll take turns being the rescuer and the casualty — and doing that with your regular climbing partner is worth a great deal, because you'll both know the same systems and the same sequences when it matters. If you come alone you'll pair up with someone in the group.
</details>

    <details>
Do I need my own gear?

No. Ropes, hardware, harness and helmet are provided. If you own a harness, belay device and a couple of prusik cords, bring them — practising with the exact kit you actually climb with is more useful than practising with ours.
</details>

    <details>
Where does it take place?

At a crag near Barcelona chosen specifically for this: good solid anchors, a wall you can hang systems from at ground level and then repeat higher up, and enough space for four people to work at once without getting tangled. Not a scenic route — a workshop with a view.
</details>

    <details>
What happens if the weather is bad?

Less of a problem than for other courses, since much of this can be taught on sheltered ground or low to the ground. If conditions genuinely prevent it we reschedule or refund, no questions asked — but we can usually run it when a climbing day wouldn't happen.
</details>

Not sure this is the one?

If you're not yet climbing multi-pitch, start with the Multi-Pitch Course — self-rescue builds directly on it.
