Over a kilometre of equipped route and 455 metres of ascent up a series of vast limestone walls above the Segre valley — the longest via ferrata in Catalunya, and the third longest in Spain. At its highest point you're 185 metres above the ground with nothing but air below your feet.

It was built in 2019 by the Alt Urgell county council, purpose-designed rather than improvised, and the equipping is superb — some climbers say almost over-generous, with more rock and more rungs than you strictly need. That quality is what makes a route of this scale enjoyable rather than punishing. It arrived to fill the gap left by the closure of the legendary Regina ferrata at Peramola, and it's the route Catalan ferratistas now travel for.

★ The spiral staircase

The route's signature: a twisting, corkscrewing ladder bolted out into space, where balance and foot placement matter more than strength. Locally it's known as the escala Mariajo. There's nothing else quite like it in Spain, and it's the photograph everyone comes home with.

Two routes in one

Narieda is built in two distinct sections, and that structure is genuinely useful. The first is the shorter familiar section at K3 — airy chained traverses, slightly overhanging flanks and two bridges, finishing at a natural platform with a marked escape path down. Around 280 metres of route and 80 metres of ascent, roughly an hour. Plenty of people do exactly that and go home happy.

The second section is where the route earns its reputation: longer, sustained K4, with endless vertical walls, long flanking traverses on widely spaced staples, several bridges of different types including a 40-metre Tibetan crossing, the spiral ladder, and three rest platforms built in because you'll want them.

✓ We can tune the day to the group

Because of that structure, this is one of the few big routes where the length is genuinely adjustable on the day. We can finish at the escape after section one, take the popular middle option — up to the 40-metre Tibetan bridge and then a 25-metre rappel back to the return path — or commit to the full 1,119 metres. Your guide reads the group and decides. Nobody gets marched past their limit.

Section by section

Approach · 30 min

From the parking below Fígols — around 17 spaces — a marked path up to the foot of the wall.

The entrance

Two ways in: the K3 familiar line, or a K4 sport variant. FAQs

Catalunya's longest via ferrata asks more of you than most — here's exactly what, and how we make it achievable.

Is it for me?

    <details>
How hard is Roca Narieda really?

The individual moves aren't the hardest in Catalunya — the difficulty is the length. Over a kilometre of equipped route and 455 metres of ascent means several hours of sustained arm work with constant exposure, and the upper section can feel relentless once you're tired. If you're fit and have done a ferrata or two, it's very achievable. If you're new to the sport, it isn't the place to start.
</details>

    <details>
Do I need previous via ferrata experience?

Strongly recommended, yes. This is a K4 route with a demanding start, and it's long. Ideally you've done at least one K3 route and know how the clipping system works under fatigue. If you haven't, Baumes Corcades is the natural first step and takes half a day — plenty of people do that one first and come back for this.
</details>

    <details>
What's the hardest part?

Counter-intuitively, the very beginning. The entrance flank is the most physically demanding moment of the whole route, and it arrives before you're warmed up. There are two ways in — a K3 familiar line and a harder K4 sport variant — and your guide picks the one that suits you. After that the route is long rather than desperate.
</details>

    <details>
Can I do a shorter version?

Yes, and this is one of the best things about the route. It's built in two sections: you can finish at the escape path after the first section — about an hour of climbing and 80 metres of ascent — or take the middle option, climbing to the 40-metre Tibetan bridge and then rappelling 25 metres down to the return path. We decide on the day based on how the group is moving. Nobody gets marched past their limit.
</details>

The route

    <details>
What is the spiral ladder?

The route's signature feature and the photo everyone comes home with: a corkscrewing steel ladder bolted out into open space, known locally as the escala Mariajo. It's more about balance and foot placement than strength, and there's nothing else quite like it in Spain. It sits in the upper section, so you only reach it if you're doing the full route.
</details>

    <details>
How many bridges are there?

Several, and deliberately varied — Tibetan bridges, Nepalese bridges and walkways, including one Tibetan crossing of 40 metres. The first section has two, and the rest are spread through the long upper section. Along with the spiral ladder, they're what stop a route of this length becoming monotonous.
</details>

    <details>
How exposed is it?

Very. The maximum height above the ground is 185 metres, and much of the upper section traverses open wall with air beneath you. You're clipped to a continuous cable throughout and there are three rest platforms built into the route, but if serious exposure troubles you, this is not the route to test that on.
</details>

    <details>
Is it really the longest in Catalunya?

Yes — 1,119 metres of equipped route, which makes it the longest in Catalunya and the third longest in Spain, with 455 metres of ascent. It was built in 2019 by the Alt Urgell county council as a purpose-designed project, and the equipping is excellent; some climbers say almost over-generous, which on a route this long is a mercy rather than a criticism.
</details>

Practical

    <details>
How fit do I need to be?

Fitter than for our other routes, honestly. This is the one where endurance decides your day: several hours of intermittent hard effort, mostly through the arms and shoulders. If you exercise regularly and can sustain effort over a long morning, you'll be fine. If your fitness is occasional, do the shorter finish — it's a great day out on its own terms.
</details>

    <details>
When is the best time to go?

Spring and autumn, clearly. The walls face the sun and the valley traps heat, so summer here is genuinely punishing on a route that takes hours — one of the most common warnings from people who've done it is simply to bring far more water than you think. Winter is possible on mild dry days, though the short daylight makes the full route tight.
</details>

    <details>
How much water should I bring?

More than usual — at least two litres per person, and more in warm weather. This is the single most underestimated thing about Narieda.
</details>

    <details>
Where is it and how do I get there?

Fígols i Alinyà, in the Alt Urgell near Organyà and Coll de Nargó, reached via the C-14 through the Segre valley. There's a dedicated parking area below the village with around 17 spaces and the approach on foot takes about 30 minutes. It's a longer drive from Barcelona than our other routes, which is part of why this is a full-day activity.
</details>

    <details>
What should I bring?

Shoes with a good grippy sole, clothes you can move in, sun protection, plenty of water and something to eat on the rest platforms. Gloves are mandatory over a route this long. We provide the harness, energy-absorbing lanyard, helmet and all rappel equipment.
</details>

    <details>
What's your cancellation policy?

If weather or rock conditions don't allow the activity to go ahead safely, we reschedule or propose an equivalent alternative, and if neither works you receive a full refund. Free cancellation up to 7 days in advance. On a route this long we're also conservative about heat — if the forecast is extreme, we'll suggest moving the date.
</details>

Not sure this is the one?

If a full day sounds like a lot, Baumes Corcades is a half-day classic with escape options throughout.
