Cágate Lorito, above the lake at Sant Llorenç de Montgai, is routinely described by Spanish ferratistas as the most original route they have ever climbed, and one of the very best in the country.

It is not long. Around 150 metres of equipped route and 65 metres of ascent, with a thirty-minute approach and a twenty-minute walk back. What it lacks in length it makes up for in sheer invention: a Nepalese bridge, a zipline, a fireman's pole, two pendulums, two overhanging ladders, a suspended ladder beneath a roof, layback traverses out over nothing, and sections where the holds are spaced far enough apart that you have to commit and jump. Since its extension the route now finishes where it starts.

★ The suspended ladder

The route's most photographed moment: a heavily overhanging roof with a ladder hanging free beneath it, reached when your arms are already gone. Getting onto it is the crux of the whole day. Everyone who climbs this route talks about it afterwards, usually while shaking out their forearms.

K5+ or K6? An honest note on the grade

Sources disagree, and it's worth knowing why. Some catalogue it as K6 and call it the second hardest ferrata in Spain; others grade it K5+ on the reasoning that it's slightly easier than the genuinely brutal Feliz Navidad. A few experienced climbers argue that the bell ladder and the well-equipped bridge take the edge off what could otherwise have been legendary. What nobody disputes is that this is at the very top end of the sport, and that it is enormously fun — one comparison put it well: Cinctorres is clearly harder, but Cágate Lorito is far more enjoyable.

Two sections, one decision

The first section is the more vertical one, with consecutive overhangs building to the suspended ladder, the Nepalese bridge, and a pendulum that drops you at the summit box — where a stuffed toy parrot has traditionally kept watch, and where you can stop, sign in, take the photograph and walk out. The second section, added later, is arguably harder still in pure strength terms: a traverse on small red holds, a descent, another traverse, and then the fireman's pole. We decide at the parrot whether to continue, based on how much you have left.

Section by section

Approach · 30 min

From the parking on the north edge of the village, a short walk up to the base of the wall above the lake.

The first wall

Vertical from the outset on widely spaced holds, with a couple of places where you genuinely have to jump to reach the next one. A heavily overhanging roof with a free-hanging ladder beneath it, and a short overhang to exit. Done as fast as you can, because the forearms won't wait.

Bridge & pendulum

A final overhang to the highest point, then the Tibetan bridge, then a pendulum swinging you down to the summit box and the parrot. Section one ends here — and so can your day.

Section two

A traverse right on small red holds, a short descent, a traverse left, and the fireman's pole. Comfortable terrain for climbers; harder than it looks for everyone else.

The zipline & return

The route finishes back where it began, with a zipline among the final surprises. FAQs

The hardest route we guide. Here's exactly what it asks of you, and how to know whether you're ready.

Am I ready for this?

    <details>
Who is this route actually for?

Fit, experienced ferratistas — people who have already climbed K4 routes comfortably and want the hardest, most inventive day the sport offers in Catalunya. It is not a first ferrata, nor a second, nor a third. If you're unsure, message us before booking with what you've climbed and we'll give you a straight answer. We'd rather turn a booking away than watch someone get shut down on the second overhang.
</details>

    <details>
Is it K5+ or K6?

Sources genuinely disagree, and it's worth knowing why. Some catalogue it as K6 and call it the second hardest ferrata in Spain; others grade it K5+ on the reasoning that it's a step below the notorious Feliz Navidad. What nobody disputes is that it sits at the very top end of the sport. Treat it as K6 when deciding whether you're ready, and you won't be caught out.
</details>

    <details>
How strong do I need to be?

Strong. Long sections offer almost nothing for the feet, so your arms carry you, and the crux — a heavily overhanging roof with a free-hanging ladder — arrives when they're already tired. If you can do several pull-ups and have climbed sustained overhanging ferrata sections before, you're in the right territory. Cardio fitness matters far less here than upper-body endurance.
</details>

    <details>
What if I get partway and can't continue?

There is an escape at the end of the first section, at the summit box, and it's a perfectly respectable place to finish — many people do exactly that and still have a superb day. Beyond that, the hard sections have no easy escapes, which is precisely why we cap the group at four and read how you're moving before committing to section two.
</details>

The route

    <details>
What's on the route?

More than almost any ferrata in Spain: a Nepalese bridge, a zipline, a fireman's pole, two pendulums, two overhanging ladders, a ladder suspended beneath a roof, layback traverses out over open air, and a few places where the holds are far enough apart that you commit and jump. It's regularly described as an adventure park for adults, and since its extension the route finishes where it starts.
</details>

    <details>
What's the hardest move?

Getting onto the suspended ladder under the roof. It's a heavily overhanging section reached at the point where your forearms are already complaining, with a short overhang to exit afterwards. Most people climb it as fast as they can, because waiting doesn't help. We back it up with a rope.
</details>

    <details>
Why is it called Cágate Lorito?

It's a Spanish exclamation of disbelief — roughly "well, blow me down" — and the route lives up to it. There has traditionally been a stuffed toy parrot at the summit box at the end of the first section, along with the signature book, and reaching it is the ritual halfway moment of the day.
</details>

    <details>
How long does it take?

Around four hours door to door. The approach is only thirty minutes and the walk back twenty, so almost all of that is spent on the route itself — fast parties move through the climbing quickly, but guided we take the time to protect the cruxes properly and let people rest between them.
</details>

Practical

    <details>
Where is it and how do I get there?

Sant Llorenç de Montgai, in La Noguera, Lleida — take the C-13 toward Camarasa and then the LV-9047. The parking sits at the north entrance to the village, a few hundred metres before you reach it, and the route climbs the wall above the lake. Full meeting details come with your booking confirmation.
</details>

    <details>
Do I need gloves?

Yes, and unlike on gentler routes this isn't optional in practice. You'll be gripping cable, bars and steel holds hard for hours, and bare hands take a beating. Bring a pair that lets you still feel the carabiners.
</details>

    <details>
When is the best time to go?

Spring and autumn. The wall is exposed and the Noguera valley gets hot, and this is not a route to attempt tired and dehydrated. Winter days are fine when dry and still, though cold hands on steel makes hard moves harder. We won't run it in rain at all.
</details>

    <details>
Can we come as a group of six?

Not with one guide. We cap this route at four per guide because every crux needs individual attention and rope back-up, and a bigger group means people hanging around tired on hard ground. For a larger party we can run two guides — tell us numbers and dates and we'll organise it.
</details>

    <details>
Is there anything to do afterwards?

Sant Llorenç de Montgai sits on a lake with pedal boats and a couple of good places to eat, so a lot of people make an afternoon of it. Given how short the approach and return are, you'll be off the wall with the day still ahead of you.
</details>

    <details>
What's your cancellation policy?

If weather or rock conditions don't allow the activity to go ahead safely, we reschedule or propose an equivalent alternative, and if neither works you receive a full refund. Free cancellation up to 7 days in advance.
</details>

Not sure this is the one?

If this sounds like a step too far for now, Canal de les Dames in Montserrat is the next hardest we guide and a good measuring stick.
