The Canal de les Dames climbs a natural channel carved into the vertical south face above Collbató, and it has a reputation as the most athletic ferrata within reach of Barcelona.

Where most ferratas give you a ladder of rungs to step up, long stretches here are chains, staples and artificial holds with very little for the feet, so you pull with your arms and your forearms pay for it. The route works its way up the canal in a series of overhanging ladders, diagonal traverses and vertical walls, always enclosed by conglomerate — you spend the morning inside the mountain rather than on the outside of it, with the spires of Montserrat closing overhead.

★ The final chimney

The route keeps its hardest moment for last: a smooth, polished chimney equipped with a thick cable and almost no footholds, where progress is essentially a pull-up sequence on the lifeline. It's the section everyone talks about afterwards, and the reason we set the pace so you reach it with something left. If you're tired, we rest before it — not in the middle of it.

Who it's really for

A lot of websites list this as an introductory route, and the Catalan ferrata community is fairly united in saying they're wrong. It's graded K4 with harder passages, it demands genuine upper-body strength, and the exposure is constant. If you've done a K2 or K3 ferrata and want to step up to something more technical and complete, this is exactly the right next route. If it would be your first, it isn't — and we'd rather tell you that now than halfway up the canal.

Section by section

Approach · 20–30 min

From the large Vinya Nova parking, a track heading east toward the face, then up to the mouth of the canal.

The opening wall

Straight into it: a vertical start on widely spaced staples. Rhythm matters more than technique here.

Diagonal traverses

Long flanking sections across the wall on artificial holds, some of them slightly overhanging, with the drop opening below and the monastery side of the massif in view.

The overhanging ladders

The most athletic ground on the route: ladders and staples over bulges where the arms do most of the work. The canal was heavily over-used, with erosion, rockfall, and noise disturbing the cliff-nesting birds on the facing walls, and a steady stream of rescues. The route was closed entirely in July 2020 when an inspection found the installations in poor and dangerous condition, and it only reopened after the Patronat commissioned a professional re-equipment — one of very few installations on the mountain they've taken responsibility for maintaining.

✓ We handle the paperwork

Booking with us means the authorisation is applied for and carried on the day as part of your booking. FAQs

The permit, the difficulty, the chimney and the practicalities — everything people ask about Montserrat's only via ferrata.

Permits & access

    <details>
Do I need a permit for the Montserrat via ferrata?

Yes. Since October 2020 the Canal de les Dames has required advance written authorisation from the Patronat de la Muntanya de Montserrat, and the person named on it must carry it during the activity — rangers can ask to see it. Daily places are capped at four people Monday to Friday and ten at weekends and public holidays, allocated in the order applications arrive. When you book with us, we apply for and carry the authorisation.
</details>

    <details>
How far in advance should I book?

As early as you possibly can. With only four places on the whole mountain midweek and ten at weekends, independent climbers have waited months to secure a weekend slot for a group. This is genuinely not a route you can add to the plan the night before, and weekend dates in spring and autumn go furthest ahead.
</details>

    <details>
Why is the route regulated at all?

Over-use. Erosion in the canal, rockfall onto people below, noise disturbing the cliff-nesting birds on the facing walls, and a steady stream of mountain rescues. The route was closed completely in July 2020 after an inspection found the installations in dangerous condition, and reopened only once the Patronat had commissioned a professional re-equipment. The permit system is what keeps it open.
</details>

    <details>
Are there other via ferratas in Montserrat?

No — the Canal de les Dames is currently the only equipped route on the mountain. The historic Teresina line, which finished near Sant Jeroni and was one of the first ferratas in Spain, was removed years ago as the park tightened its regulations. Montserrat has thousands of climbing routes, but only this one ferrata.
</details>

Difficulty

    <details>
Is this route suitable for beginners?

Honestly, no. A number of websites list it as an introductory route and the Catalan ferrata community broadly disagrees. It's K4 with harder passages, the terrain is frequently overhanging, and long stretches are chains and staples with very little for the feet, so it demands real upper-body strength. If it would be your first, Baumes Corcades is a far better introduction and we'll tell you so.
</details>

    <details>
What experience do I need?

At least one previous via ferrata at K2 or K3, and reasonable fitness in the arms and shoulders. Minimum age is 16. What matters most is that you're comfortable with sustained exposure and with pulling your own weight repeatedly — this route asks for that from the first move to the last.
</details>

    <details>
How hard is the final chimney?

It's the hardest part of the route and the reason people remember it. The rock is smooth and polished with almost nothing for the feet, so progress is essentially pulling on the thick cable with your arms. It's short, but it arrives when you're already tired — which is why we deliberately rest before it rather than during it, and back it up with a rope.
</details>

    <details>
What's the terrain actually like?

The route climbs a natural channel in the vertical south face, so you're enclosed by conglomerate for most of the morning. Expect overhanging ladders, diagonal traverses on artificial holds, chain sections and vertical walls, with short walking links between them. It's athletic rather than technical: strength and rhythm matter more than footwork.
</details>

Practical

    <details>
How do I get there from Barcelona?

Collbató is about 45 minutes from Barcelona on the A-2 — roughly 40 km. We meet near the Vinya Nova restaurant on the south side of Montserrat, where there's a large parking area, and the approach on foot takes 20 to 30 minutes. Full meeting instructions come with your booking confirmation.
</details>

    <details>
What should I wear and bring?

Trainers with a good rubber sole, approach shoes or light trekking boots — trail-running shoes are ideal. Clothes you can move in, water, and gloves, which matter more here than on most routes because of the amount of chain-pulling. We provide the harness, energy-absorbing lanyard and helmet.
</details>

    <details>
Is rockfall a real risk?

It's the main objective hazard on this route. Climbing inside a canal means anything falling from above is funnelled down your line, and the wild goats on Montserrat's slopes regularly dislodge stones. Helmets are mandatory, we brief the group on spacing and on what to do if you hear rock coming, and we choose timing and positioning to minimise exposure.
</details>

    <details>
When is the best time to go?

Spring and autumn are ideal. Because the route sits in a shaded canal it stays noticeably cooler than open faces, which makes it a good choice on hot days when other ferratas are unpleasant. Cold winter days are less enjoyable — metal chains and bare hands are a poor combination — and we don't run it in rain, since the chimney is slippery enough dry.
</details>

    <details>
Can we go as a group of six or more?

Not midweek — the permit caps the entire route at four people a day from Monday to Friday. Weekends allow ten, so a larger group is sometimes possible on a Saturday or Sunday, or we can split you across two days. Tell us your numbers and preferred dates as early as you can and we'll work out what's achievable.
</details>

    <details>
What's your cancellation policy?

If weather or rock conditions don't allow the activity to go ahead safely, we reschedule or propose an equivalent alternative, and if neither works you receive a full refund. Free cancellation up to 7 days in advance. Note that because permits are date-specific and capped, rescheduling depends on availability on the new date.
</details>

Not sure this is the one?

If this would be your first via ferrata, Baumes Corcades is a gentler introduction with escape options throughout.
