A great way to experience the rock of Montserrat: day one on the perfect first multi-pitch; day two on the most emblematic summit in Catalunya.
Book NowWe propose you this combo to experience the conglomerate of Montserrat in a progressive way, while getting to enjoy climbing these two iconic routes.
Montserrat's rock is unlike anywhere else in Europe - rounded pebbles cemented together, where you pull on cobbles and pockets instead of edges and cracks, and where the movement is three-dimensional and completely counter-intuitive at first.
Our guides will adapt to your level and needs to successfully climb the two routes. By the second morning when we will attack Cavall Bernat, your guide knows how you move, what you're comfortable with and where you hesitate — so the pace, the belays and the whole rhythm are built around you.
Five bolted pitches and around 150 metres of golden conglomerate on a sunny east face, looking straight across at the monastery. It's the route we recommend most often as a first multi-pitch: a confidence-building start, a short V+ crux that asks for precise feet rather than strength, and a genuine summit at the top. You'll finish the day understanding how the rock works, how the rope systems flow, and how a full day on a wall actually feels.
The icon! Four pitches at V+ up the spire that was considered unclimbable until 1935, on equipment that spans every era of Catalan climbing — modern bolts beside pitons hammered in by the first ascensionists. The third pitch is a magnificent dihedral that grows more aerial the higher you go. At the top there's the Moreneta, a 360-degree view of the whole massif, and a summit that means something to every climber in Catalunya.
Founded in 1978, the Grup Cavall Bernat has one membership requirement: you must have climbed the spire, proven with a photograph from the summit. Its members — cavallistes — meet once a year. We'll make sure you get the photo.
Meet at Montserrat, gear check, and approach hike in to the base of the Gorro Frigi. Climbing by mid-morning.
Five pitches at a relaxed pace, three to four hours, with your guide teaching the rock as you go — how conglomerate takes weight, where to look for holds, how to move on it efficiently.
Two rappels down the east face, back at the car in the early afternoon. Enough left in you to enjoy the evening.
A longer walk in — around an hour and a quarter — up toward the ridge, with the spire in view most of the way. Time to talk through the route before you're on it.
Four pitches: the airy opening traverse, the great dihedral, and the final section to the summit. Around three hours, unhurried, with everything you learned yesterday already in your hands.
The Moreneta, the photograph, and the view. Then two rappels down and the walk back.
Climbers comfortable seconding around V+ who want a proper introduction to Montserrat rather than a single day out. You don't need multi-pitch experience — your guide handles every rope system and all four rappels across the two days — but you should be reasonably fit and genuinely comfortable with exposure, particularly on day two. Two consecutive days of climbing is more than most people are used to.

Why two days works better than one, what each day involves, and the practicalities of a Montserrat weekend.
If you only have one day, Gorro Frigi is the best single introduction to Montserrat. If you already know the rock and want the biggest line on the spire, go straight for the Punsola-Reniu.
