Red conglomerate drilled through with pockets, in a quiet valley in the Priorat. A completely different way of moving on rock — and one of the best winter crags in Europe.
Book NowMargalef doesn't look like anywhere else. The rock is a deep red conglomerate perforated with holes — from finger-sized pockets to buckets you can get a whole hand into — and climbing it feels less like pulling on edges than like solving a three-dimensional puzzle with your fingers.
It has become one of the most famous sport climbing valleys in the world, with routes at the very top of the grade scale and a steady stream of international climbers through the village all winter. But like Siurana, its reputation for difficulty hides how much moderate climbing there is: sector after sector of well-bolted routes in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades, on the same beautiful rock.
This is Margalef's real secret. The valley catches sun and shelters from wind, which means that while the rest of Europe is climbing indoors, you can be in a T-shirt on red rock in January. If you're looking for somewhere to climb between November and March, this is the answer.
Pockets, mostly, on gently to steeply overhanging walls. It's more physical than Siurana and easier on your feet, since the holds are positive and obvious — but it asks a lot of your fingers, and it's a style that takes a little adapting to. Most people find it enormously fun straight away. Your guide picks sectors that suit your level and keeps an eye on how your fingers are holding up, which on this rock genuinely matters.
Pocket climbing loads individual fingers in a way that edges don't, and it's the one crag where we actively slow people down. If you're new to pockets we'll warm you up properly, keep you off the smallest holds, and stop you before enthusiasm turns into a strained tendon. It's the most common injury here and it's entirely avoidable.
Beginners, because the holds are generous and obvious. Gym climbers, because the style is closer to indoor climbing than most Catalan crags. And experienced climbers, because there's world-class rock at every grade and always something to try. Tell us where you're at and we'll build the day around it.
Pick your date below. Tell us your level and we'll plan the sectors.
Pockets, fingers, winter conditions and how Margalef compares to Siurana.
For technical footwork on vertical limestone instead, Siurana is forty minutes away. If you want the skills to climb outdoors independently, see the Sport Climbing Introduction.
